Sid Hartman had the following articles in the two days following the firing of Glen Mason, Sid Hartman: Mason says he's not going to apologize and Sid Hartman: Mason wanted to finish what he started here.
Essentially he says he ran a clean program, lost some games (and won a couple too) he should not have, players graduated, and the athletes were never in trouble.
I agree with him on what he says.
The issue that most people have is that there are many, many coaches programs that can say that too.
It’s as if he thinks he should be given a statue for getting us from a perennial 10th place team to a 7th place team. That is where he lost support from most people.
He will get another coaching job. He is a good man and a good coach. The issue is that most believe the Gopher football program was not going to be moving forward with any speed while under his control.
Can he turn a program around? Sure. Kent State, Kansas, and now Minnesota. Can he coach a good program? I would think so. What I mean is could he coach a really good team, I think so if he has strong assistant coaches.
Glen Mason seems to run his team more like a CEO, like a manager. I am not convinced he can get a program from respectable to really good.
